School’s Out!

We did it! We completed our first school year at SPH! This year had its ups and downs, but also lots of perks like new friends, getting to try things like ballet and soccer (a new favourite sport for J) and of course more travelling.

I think like many things in life, it feels like it went by so fast and yet, last July feels like so long ago.

However, I wasn’t expecting to suddenly find myself in summer vacation. It snuck up on me this year. Perhaps it was lack of similar routines. Perhaps there was no crisp spring air turning warmer and warmer as the trees filled out their green canopies to lead me here.

Perhaps it was the fact that school ended unexpectedly two days early.

On April 17 of this year, Indonesia took to the polls to elect their president, a race between the incumbent, Joko Widodo (or Jokowi) and Prabowo Subianto. On Tuesday, May 21st, the official results came out showing Jokowi the winner by a margin of 18 million votes (about 11%). Needless to say, there were many disappointed people. Some chose to protest calmly, others chose to cause violence and damage.

Because of the threat of protests and the actual protesting and rioting that occurred, our school needed to close for the safety of many who had to travel through the core of our city to get there (thankfully a safe distance from the action).

We bumped up our awards assemblies to earlier in the week, and there were hopes that our last day would still be a normal one. Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled as well. Exams carried on as they must, but most of us found ourselves suddenly into school vacation.

My kids were both thrilled and disappointed. We didn’t get our goodbyes with friends at school, but they got a couple extra days to play with their friends the staff kids.

Many expats have already headed home for their summer break. Some have moved on and away from Jakarta. We’ve savoured every minute with our Jakarta family, constantly making plans for last minute meals together. The reality of the expat life where you make great friends only to say goodbye too soon, has finally hit us.

It’s also making some of us a little homesick, wishing we could come home too. Okay, if I’m honest, it’s more than a little. If I let myself think about it for too long, I may just find something to sell and book a few tickets home.

But, we still have lots to look forward to! We have family coming for two and a half weeks and will do some traveling on Java with them. Then we will be going to Perth, Australia for almost two weeks. I’m actually, really looking forward to the cooler weather and definitely to getting out into the fresh air and doing some hiking. There are also friends who have stayed and we look forward to spending time with them as well.

School’s out and now we learn what summer vacation looks like in Jakarta. I’m looking forward to a change of pace, regrouping and heading into the next school year more confident about what to expect.

Here’s what summer looks like so far…
